Two new United Methodist bishops elected for Angola

Two new United Methodist bishops were elected during the church's recent Africa Central Conference in Mozambique and assigned to supervise areas in Angola.

Elected were the Rev. Jose Quipungo, 50, assigned to the church's East Angola Area, and the Rev. Gaspar Joao Domingos, 39, assigned to the West Angola Area.

The Africa Central Conference was held Aug. 16-20 in Maputo, Mozambique. Convened every four years, the conference includes delegates from five annual (regional) conferences in the area. Quipungo succeeds Moises Domingos Fernandes, who has retired, and Domingos succeeds Bishop Emilio de Carvalho, who is retiring.

Quipungo has been serving as pastor of Monte Sinai United Methodist Church in Luanda since 1999. Previously, he served the Central United Methodist Church in Luanda for six years and student pastor in the Rudge Ramos Methodist Church in Brazil for three years. He earned his degrees in theology from the Methodist Institute of Higher Education in Brazil. He and his wife, Laurinda Vidal Quipungo, have three sons and two daughters. The Quipungos will reside in Malange.

Domingos has been serving as general secretary of the Council of Christian Churches in Angola. Previously, he worked in peace and reconciliation and youth ministry, and he was staff executive for the church's Africa Central Conference. He served as pastor of the Galilee United Methodist Church in Angola and student pastor at Rudge Ramos Methodist Church in Brazil. Before his work experience with the church, he was a primary school teacher and an officer in the Angolan Fisheries Minister's office. He earned his bachelor's degree in theology at the Methodist Institute of Higher Education in Brazil and graduated from the Ecumenical Institute of Bossey, University of Geneva, Switzerland. He and his wife, Lucrecia Manual Alexandre Domingos, have three daughters and three sons. The Domingos will reside in Luanda.
